My interest in Japan started off with spending those weekends as a child watching Japanese animation (anime). Famous ones like Doraemon, Dragon Ball Z, Ranma 1/2, Transformers, the list goes on. But you get my point. Then it branched off into dramas too. To date I’ve watched so many that it is almost ridiculous to count. And of course, because I’m such a lover of music, I also ended up loving their music because they have such great talent and wide genres. Finally, after a span of 10 years of being absorbed in another culture, I decided to learn the language. Difficult as it was, and still is, I pressed on and I can say that I have reached a level of competency to hold a normal conversation with native Japanese. Though I admit that it still needs lots and lots of polishing. (The grammar is killing me!)
One day, I think when I was still in high school, I read a short article in a Christian newsletter/magazine, can’t really remember, about a “missionaries’ graveyard.” That title caught my attention and as I read on, I realised how dark the spiritual climate is in Japan and how deeply the Japanese need to know Christ. So I guess that was what started me on this journey of wanting to go to Japan and preach the gospel. Once I had that chance to go, I jumped at it. I’ve been to Japan 4 times – once on a short 2-week exchange programme in Hiroshima, thrice for mission trips to Tokyo (twice) and Nagoya (once). After each trip, I returned with the strong urge to return to this land of the rising sun and a desire to bring the one true Son to them.
This page will be an accumulation of what I have on Japan since I started loving this country like my own. I hope the information will be helpful and useful for you as a prayer tool to pray for the country!
